How Many Ways

For this routine, pick an appropriate number and have student represent it in as many ways as they can. Students might use dice, ten frames, tens and ones, number words or money to show their number. Do this as a whole class number talk to allow students to learn from their peers and feel comfortable with the process then progress to math journals or writing on non-permanent surfaces in partners! Eventually, students will move to using operations to represent the number.
