Math Shakers: Whole class set for K-3 and 4-7

From the Boxcars and One-Eyed Jacks Website:

"This amazing manipulative integrates whole body movement into learning which studies show increases engagement and retention of key mathematical concepts. Our shakers are durable plastic that allow for a variety of dice to be added as the containers can be opened. The dice shakers can be used in whole class learning or small groups and are ideal for students in kindergarten to grade 8. These shakers are far more than a storage container, they are a powerful tool that helps provide quick practice with many primary to middle years math concepts. These shakers can be used all day, not just at math time, as they provide a brain break followed by quick math practice opportunities. "

Working with Ten Frames

Full Class Numeracy Bin:

Work with this class set of ten frames as a tool to help students gain understanding of tens, ways to make ten, strategies for addition and subtraction. Ten Frames also function to help students as a concrete model of our base ten system. They can be used as manipulatives to support addition and subtraction and are a great way to model thinking during number talks.

Oxford Numicon is an educational tool designed to help children understand mathematical concepts through structured imagery, using colorful, multi-sensory resources that visually and tactilely represent numbers and their relationships. The system features plastic shapes with holes representing numbers from 1 to 10, each with a distinct color and shape, which aids in visualizing number relationships and arithmetic operations. Pattern boards and pegs allow children to create patterns and solve problems, reinforcing their understanding, while base ten blocks help grasp place value and larger numbers. Numicon’s visual and tactile learning approach makes abstract concepts more concrete, supporting number sense, mathematical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Teachers can use Numicon for counting, number recognition, addition, subtraction, place value, multiplication, and problem-solving activities, providing a robust framework for teaching mathematics and building a strong foundation in numeracy for a wide range of learners.

Pentominoes

12 Sets of Pentominos and "Working with Pentominoes" Resource:

Pentominoes are a valuable educational tool that enhance various skills in elementary students. Manipulating pentomino shapes helps students visualize how objects fit together, improving their spatial reasoning skills. Solving pentomino puzzles challenges students to think critically and develop problem-solving strategies. These activities require trial and error, teaching students perseverance and patience. Group activities with pentominoes foster communication, collaboration, and teamwork. Using pentominoes helps students understand geometry, symmetry, area, and perimeter in a practical, hands-on way. Additionally, pentominoes encourage creative thinking and innovation as students explore different configurations and create their own puzzles. Implementing pentominoes in the classroom can include regular puzzle challenges, incorporating them into learning centers for independent exploration, organizing collaborative projects to solve complex puzzles, and using digital pentomino apps and games for additional engagement.

Cuisenaire Rods

Cuisenaire rods are educational tools designed to teach mathematical concepts through visual and tactile methods. These rods come in various colors and lengths, with each length representing a different numerical value from 1 to 10. The rods support visual and hands-on learning, making them versatile for teaching a wide range of topics, including arithmetic, fractions, geometry, and algebra. By manipulating the rods, students can visualize mathematical relationships, enhancing comprehension and retention.

Cuisenaire rods promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills as students explore and experiment with different mathematical scenarios. Practical classroom applications include visualizing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; demonstrating fractions and equivalency; and exploring measurement, geometry, and algebra. Research shows that students using Cuisenaire rods develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, engage more effectively in lessons, and improve their problem-solving skills.
